Out in the Middle of Nowhere

Ever want to get away from it all? Leave the crazy hustle? Get lost? Unplug? Let go? Breathe for a minute? I love the city, but I also love to distance myself by turning off the phone, wandering, and going where the wind carries me. The best places are often on the path less traveled, miles from civilization, way up high, on the water... in the middle of nowhere. Here are just a few stunningly beautiful photos that capture just that. Breathtaking, cliff-side hike along the Amalfi coast from Agerola to Positano. Layers of sienna and gold dirt on the outskirts of Nicosia in Cyprus. Paradise (aka the Andaman sea) is dotted with 1000s of uninhabited, lush islands and hidden beaches. Nothing for miles but a few scrawny cows and goats on the hills of Batanes in the Philippines. High above the clouds in the Swiss Alps near the Italian border, the Matterhorn stands tall! Somewhere off the roadside in Donegal Co., Ireland, a scene that would inspire a Bob Ross painting. In the tall grasses of the Florida Everglades, be quiet and you'll hear a swish or two that might be a gator. Rock art and mountains in Iceland, somewhere roughly 45 minutes outside the capital of Reykjavik. Taro fields in Kauai, Hawaii's "Garden Isle", will one day become the starchy, Polynesian staple poi. Santorini's caldera is a haven for seekers of solitude and some one-on-one time with nature's splendor. A drive through Tuscany reveals tiny roads into open fields and trees that stand alone. This coastal walk from Monaco along the Cap d'Ail has endless views of the deep blue Mediterranean.

Photo on the Map: Balzers, Liechtenstein

Say it with me... "Balzers!" Ah ha ha haaaa. Probably the best name for a city. EVER. While Liechtenstein doesn't claim a spot on many must-see lists, it's a great place to make a pit stop when traveling around eastern Switzerland. We snagged another passport stamp and got to run around shouting, "Sir Ulrich von Liechtensteeiiiiin," the whole afternoon. In addition to spending an hour around Gutenberg Castle and snapping this pretty picture of the Alps, we lunched in Vaduz on ultra-scrumptious kaesespaetzle and the Prince's very own Riesling.

Stunning Sunsets Around the World

Sunsets are juxtaposed between the ordinary and phenomenal. Around the world, people witness the glowing orb rise and fall at the horizon, signaling the natural beginning and end to the day. A celestial routine and marker of time, the sunset is a sight worth seeing. In this infinite act we find beauty, limitless and personal, an experience celebrated across culture, race, and distance. Watching the sunset, something we've done a thousand times over, is made new again; spectacular, fleeting, full of color and movement, in an unfamiliar place. The Wonderful People of the Philippines

We met a lot of really great people during our travels thus far, but the genuine warmth and welcoming nature from the people of the Philippines really stands out. Young children were constantly running up to greet us and ask, "What's your name?" A little girl that spoke virtually no English, walked with us and showed us her family's farm. Wandering down the streets, each person we passed smiled and said, "Hello." It actually seemed strange at first - honestly, we just weren't used to people being that friendly. Generally, it's perfectly normal to look down and pass a stranger in silence; but not here. We visited some extremely rural, undeveloped villages. Many homes were little more than huts, running water was a rarity, and oxen were used to plow through fields of rice. Young or old, man or woman, all people shared a common thread; with so few modern conveniences or luxuries, they are so happy and optimistic. It seemed only fitting to dedicate a post to their charm and character, and to share some great photos and memories they gave us. [See image gallery at www.cameraandcarryon.com] We arrived in the Philippines just a few days after the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit the southern shores. The US sent over 13,000 troops to help in the relief, and although the country lost more than 6,200 neighbors, friends, and family members, the final words from one of our hosts was, "Tell the American people we say, 'Thank You.'"
